Hastelloy C‑276 Stamped Components——Key Technical Challenges in Manufacturing Gaskets and Blanks

● 2026-08-17 ● - ● Leave me a message

In working environments exposed to mixed acid and chloride ions such as chemical plants, flue gas desulfurization facilities and offshore equipment, conventional stainless steel fasteners cannot deliver long-term stable service. Hastelloy C‑276 (UNS N10276), a nickel‑molybdenum‑chromium alloy, is a highly reliable material choice for such harsh conditions. Hastelloy C‑276 stamped gaskets and prefabricated blanks are widely used for sealing and connection of equipment operating in corrosive media. Thanks to its strong work-hardening property, the stamping of C‑276 is far more difficult than ordinary stainless steel.

Aoke Hardware operates an in-house stamping workshop specializing in the production of corrosion-resistant alloy stamped parts. Matching C‑276 bolts for complete flange assemblies are machined from bar stock by cooperative manufacturers within our system. The production process is clearly divided: gaskets are stamped in-house, while bolt turning is completed by partner machining workshops. Instead of applying a unified forming process to all gaskets, we customize stamping solutions flexibly according to material thickness, dimensions and service conditions.

Rapid work-hardening occurs during stamping, easily leading to springback, flatness deviation and accelerated die wear. In addition, stamping may cause surface scratches, burrs and residual stress inside workpieces. It should be noted clearly: most defects generated during stamping cannot be completely eliminated by subsequent pickling and passivation. Surface scratches will become corrosion initiation sites, and residual stress from stamping increases the risk of stress corrosion cracking for parts exposed to aggressive chemicals.

Project reviews reveal that most on-site failure risks originate from technical omissions at the inquiry stage: drawings merely specify Hastelloy C‑276 without defining supporting process, inspection and surface treatment requirements, eventually leading to premature failure of components under corrosive service conditions.

1.Risk of mixed raw material grades

Separate material inspection must be carried out for stamping sheet blanks and bolt bar stock. Mixed heat numbers or unauthorized substitution of alternative nickel alloys cannot meet long-term anti-corrosion requirements. All incoming alloy sheets and round bars undergo PMI testing to guarantee compliance with UNS N10276 composition standards.

2.Internal defects of stamping blanks

C‑276 features high work-hardening capacity. Raw material imperfections including inclusions, microcracks and poor sheet flatness will propagate during stamping, resulting in edge cracking, warpage and unstable sealing performance of gaskets. Visual inspection of blanks is the first critical checkpoint before stamping production.

3.Residual stress risks of matched machined bolts

Supporting bolts are turned from outsourced bar stock. Residual stress induced by improper turning cannot be ignored, which accelerates stress corrosion cracking in corrosive media.

4.Risk of nickel alloy thread galling and seizure

When C‑276 gaskets are assembled with C‑276 bolts of the same grade, galling and seizure tend to happen easily during tightening due to identical metallic contact.

5.Improper pickling and passivation treatment

Both stamped gaskets and machined bolts require standardized pickling and passivation. Residual oil, scale and uneven passive film thickness will impair the inherent corrosion resistance of the alloy.

With integrated production capabilities, Aoke Hardware establishes a comprehensive full-chain quality control system to ensure consistent product reliability:
